Carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites have been shown to be particularly well suited for external strengthening of reinforced concrete members. However, there is limited information about how they can be used to strengthen steel structures that are susceptible to local and global instabilities. This paper discusses test results of full-scale steel flexural specimens subjected to reversed cyclic loading, some of which are wrapped with CFRP in the plastic hinge region. The main variables investigated are lateral bracing, to study the effect of CFRP wrapping on local buckling and lateral torsional buckling, wrapping scheme, and number of layers of fibers. The test results show that application of CFRP in the plastic hinge region of flexural members has substantial benefits. In particular, the CFRP wraps can increase the size of the yielded plastic hinge region, slow down the occurrence of local buckling, and delay lateral torsional buckling. These benefits reduce strain demands in the critical plastic hinge region and substantially improve energy dissipation capacity within the plastic hinge region.  相似文献

The availability of high strength steels and concrete leads to the use of thin steel plates in concrete-filled steel tubular beam-columns. However, the use of thin steel plates in composite beam-columns gives a rise to local buckling that would appreciably reduce the strength and ductility performance of the members. This paper studies the critical local and post-local buckling behavior of steel plates in concrete-filled thin-walled steel tubular beam-columns by using the finite element analysis method. Geometric and material nonlinear analyses are performed to investigate the critical local and post-local buckling strengths of steel plates under compression and in-plane bending. Initial geometric imperfections and residual stresses presented in steel plates, material yielding and strain hardening are taken into account in the nonlinear analysis. Based on the results obtained from the nonlinear finite element analyses, a set of design formulas are proposed for determining the critical local buckling and ultimate strengths of steel plates in concrete-filled steel tubular beam-columns. In addition, effective width formulas are developed for the ultimate strength design of clamped steel plates under non-uniform compression. The accuracy of the proposed design formulas is established by comparisons with available solutions. The proposed design formulas can be used directly in the design of composite beam-columns and adopted in the advanced analysis of concrete-filled thin-walled steel tubular beam-columns to account for local buckling effects.  相似文献

The modeling of air supply devices has been identified from the International Energy Agency (IEA) Annex 20 project as one of the most important problems in applying computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to predict air flow pattern and air distribution in buildings, and the complicated HESCO nozzle diffuser used in the IEA Annex 20 test room has been proved to be particularly difficult to model. In a previous study, a simplified model for this diffuser was developed and validated against experimental data. It has been shown that this model can yield good prediction for the wall jet flow issued from the diffuser, but whether this model is capable of correctly predicting the global flow pattern in the whole test room was not known. In this paper, the benchmark data of the IEA Annex 20 Test Cases B2 and B3 were used to evaluate the performance of the model for the prediction of the global air flow pattern in the test room. It was demonstrated that this model can predict the air flow pattern in the whole test room for both the Test Cases B2 and B3 with reasonable accuracy. The significance of a velocity correction when comparing the numerical prediction with experimental data obtained using omni-directional anemometers was also discussed.  相似文献

The elastic local post-buckling behaviour of elliptical tubes under compression is analysed in this paper. A brief outline of the local, distortional and global buckling behaviour of EHS tubes is firstly provided, where it is shown that local buckling modes govern the stability of short to intermediate length tubes while distortional modes control the stability of intermediate length to moderately long tubes and global buckling dominates the behaviour of longer tubes. Following this, an in-depth numerical study employing shell finite element modelling, of the elastic local post-buckling behaviour of compressed elliptical hollow section (EHS) tubes is presented. It is concluded that EHS tubes with a low to moderate aspect ratio can support loads up to their limit loads but are imperfection sensitive (shell-type behaviour), while EHS tubes with a moderate to high aspect ratio can carry loads higher than their limit loads (plate-type behaviour) and are imperfection insensitive. The slope of the ascending post-buckling path increases with the EHS aspect ratio and can reach values up to 40% of the slope of the linear primary path. The bound imperfection amplitude concept, separating the imperfection amplitude ranges where the EHS tube is sensitive and insensitive, is proposed. It is also found that, for increasing EHS aspect ratio, the compressive stresses grow and accumulate near the zones of minimum radius of curvature while the zones of maximum radius of curvature possess an approximately uniform and relatively low compressive stress level. Therefore, it is expected that an approach based on the effective width concept widely used for the evaluation of the strength of flat plates may be adapted to the design of EHS tubes with moderate to high aspect ratios.  相似文献

Pitting corrosion is typical corrosion observed on coated hold frames in way of cargo holds of bulk carriers, which exclusively carry coal and iron ore. Extensive survey on the effect of pitting corrosion on structural strength under a wide variety of loading conditions is necessary to clarify the relationship between pitting intensity and residual strength in detail. In the present study, a series of tests has been conducted on structural models which consist of web, shell and face plates to investigate the effect of pitting corrosion on strength of web plates subjected to patch loading. In these tests, artificial pitting was made on the web plates and two equal concentrated loads have been applied vertically at the one third points of simply supported models. It was found that web crippling behavior is strongly affected by the pit distribution on the web plates. According to the FE-analyses following the experiment, ultimate strength of the web plates with pitting under patch loading is a little smaller than or almost the same as that of the web plates with uniform corrosion in terms of average thickness loss.  相似文献

The investigation was carried out to reveal the impact of urban street layout on local atmospheric environment through computational fluid dynamics (CFD) numerical simulations using standard kk–εε turbulence model. Different street canyon configurations are considered and the flow regimes summarized according to the aspect ratio of the leeward building height and the street width H1/WH1/W and the aspect ratio of the leeward building height and the windward building height H1/H2H1/H2. Three regimes are defined to denote the vortices and characteristics of pollutant dispersion in street canyons according to the parameters H1/WH1/W and H1/H2H1/H2. It is found that the pollutant transport and diffusion is strongly dependent upon the type of flow regime inside the canyon and exchange between canyon and the above roof air. The study indicated that there is a strong influence of the street layout on the wind field and the pollutant dispersion in the street canyon mainly depends on the vortex structure in the canyon. The results are validated against an extensive wind tunnel experimental (Meroney and Rafailidis) [Journal of Wind Engineering and Industrial Aerodynamics, 1996;62:37–56; http://www.mi.uni-hamburg.de] and the simulated results concluded by Sini [Atmospheric Environment 1996;30:2659–77] and Sang [Atmospheric Environment 2002;36:1137–45].  相似文献

A computational model for analysis of local buckling and postbuckling of stiffened panels is derived. The model provides a tool that is more accurate than existing design codes, and more efficient than nonlinear finite element methods. Any combination of biaxial in-plane compression or tension, shear, and lateral pressure may be analysed. Deflections are assumed in the form of trigonometric function series. The deformations are coupled such that continuity of rotation between the plate and the stiffener web is ensured, as well as longitudinal continuity of displacement. The response history is traced using energy principles and perturbation theory. The procedure is semi-analytical in the sense that all energy formulations are derived analytically, while a numerical method is used for solving the resulting set of equations, and for incrementation of the solution. The stress in certain critical points are checked using the von Mises yield criterion, and the onset of yielding is taken as an estimate of ultimate strength for design purposes.  相似文献
